Work must be carried out with the wheel removed. Place the car on supports. Figure 228 shows the parts to be removed, and it should be noted that only the springs need to be removed from the brake pads. The removal of the axle shafts must be carried out as follows:
  • loosen the eccentric locking bolt in the center of the parking brake lever equalizer, remove the eccentric until the front cable secured to the equalizer is released. For more details see. section "Brake system";
  • remove the rear brake caliper and tie it to the rear axle with wire.
  • Subsequent work related to brakes is described in the relevant section. They are carried out as follows:
  • unscrew the brake disc mounting bolt (phillips head) and remove the disk. If necessary, move the brake shoe adjuster;
  • remove the tension springs from the top side and the pressure springs;
  • from the back of the brake shield, open the drive lever, press out the hinge pin and remove the lever;

  • by turning the axle, unscrew the bearing cap nuts installed in the flange holes (figure 229). Now slowly remove the axle shaft. When dismantling both axle shafts, it is necessary to immediately mark the right and left ones after removal, in order to then install them in their original place;
  • remove the cuff and brake shield. The outer race of the axle shaft bearing often remains in the bore of the axle shaft housing. To remove it, you should use a special puller.

When installing the axle shaft, the following operations must be performed:
  • install brake shield on bridge;
  • install a gasket between the shield and the bearing cap;
  • insert the axle shaft according to the mark made;
  • align the bearing cap with the holes in the brake shield and axle housing, insert the bolts and tighten to 60–70 N·m. The bolts must always be replaced. When tightening, rotate the axle shaft to align the holes with the bolt heads;

  • move the parking brake cable drive lever and insert the hinge pin. The lever must be installed as shown in the figure 230;
  • secure the brake shoe springs as described in section. "Brake system" and install the brake drum. Tighten the mounting bolts to 20 Nm;
  • insert the wheel speed sensor connector (only on models with ABS) with a new bushing. The bushing is replaced each time the sensor is disconnected. No adjustments are needed here, since the gap between the sensor and the toothed ring is set automatically during operation. Silicone grease should be placed in the bushing; service stations use Molykote 44 Light grease for this purpose;
  • finally, check the oil level in the rear axle housing and top up with oil if necessary. Adjust the parking brake. Tighten the wheel mounting bolts to a torque of 160–180 Nm.
