Pic. 228. Removal and installation of the axle shaft of the rear axle: 1 - axle housing; 2 - cuff (always replaceable); 3 - axle shaft; 4 - coupling spring; 5 - parking brake brake shoe; 6 - clamping spring; 7 - coupling spring; 8 - drive lever; 9 - parking brake cable; 10 - hinge pin; 11 - bolt, 60–70 Nm; 12 - brake disc; 13 - bolt, 20 Nm; 14 - wheel bolt, 160–180 Nm; 15 - brake pad regulator; 16 - ABS sensor clamping sleeve; 17 - ABS sensor; 18 - brake caliper; 19 - bolt, 105–115 Nm
Carry out work with the wheel removed. Place the car on stands. On fig. 228 shows the parts to be removed, it should be noted that only the springs should be disconnected from the brake shoes. The removal of the axle shafts must be carried out as follows:
- loosen the eccentric fixing bolt in the center of the parking brake lever equalizer, remove the eccentric until the front cable fixed to the equalizer is released. See sec. «Brake system»;
- remove the rear brake caliper and tie it to the rear axle with wire.
- Further work related to the brakes is described in the relevant section. They are carried out as follows:
- unfasten the disc brake bolt (cross slot) and remove the disc. If necessary, retract the brake shoe adjuster;
- remove the coupling springs from the upper side and the clamping springs;
- on the reverse side of the brake shield, open the drive lever, press out the hinge pin and remove the lever;
Pic. 229. The method of unscrewing the bolts located behind the axle shaft flange
- turning the axle, unscrew the nuts of the bearing cover installed in the flange holes (pic. 229). Now slowly remove the axle shaft. When dismantling both axle shafts, immediately after removal, mark the right and left, in order to then install them in their original place;
- remove the cuff and brake shield. The axle bearing outer race often remains in the axle housing bore. To remove, use a special puller.
When installing the axle shaft, you must perform the following operations:
- install the brake shield on the bridge;
- install a gasket between the shield and the bearing cover;
- insert the axle shaft according to the mark made;
- Align the bearing cover with the holes in the brake shield and axle housing, insert the bolts and tighten to 60–70 Nm. Bolts must always be replaced. When tightening, turn the axle shaft to align the holes with the bolt heads;
Pic. 230. Installing the parking brake actuating lever
- move the parking brake cable drive lever, insert the hinge pin. The lever must be installed as shown in fig. 230;
- fasten the brake shoe springs as described in sec. «Brake system», and install the brake drum. Tighten the fastening bolts to 20 Nm;
- plug in the wheel speed sensor connector (only on models with ABS) with new bushing. The bushing is replaced each time the sensor is disconnected. Adjustments are not needed here, since the gap between the sensor and the ring gear is set by itself during operation. Silicone grease should be placed in the bushing; Molykote 44 Light brand grease is used for this at the service station;
- Finally, check the oil level in the rear axle housing and add oil if necessary. Adjust parking brake. Tighten the wheel bolts to a torque of 160–180 Nm.
