Pic. 220. Rear axle of a car without ABS: 1 - spring ladder nut, 100–120 Nm; 2 - spring; 3 - stepladder springs; 4 - persistent rubber pad; 5 - parking brake cable; 6 - rear axle; 7 — the lever of a drive of a regulator of pressure of back brakes; 8 - shock absorber; 9 - nut, 30–35 Nm (always replaceable); 10 - bolt, 10 Nm (always replaceable); 11 — wire connector brake pad wear sensor; 12 - brake pad wear sensor wire; 13 - brake hose, 12–16 Nm; 14 - wheel bolt, 160–180 Nm; 15 — a bolt of fastening of the shock-absorber; 16 - nut, 75–85 Nm (always replaceable); 17 - cardan shaft; 18 - bolt, 75 Nm
The bridge fastening is shown in fig. 220.
Removal requires a jack of sufficient capacity. Work is best done with an assistant, since the bridge must be held during removal. Removal of the rear axle is carried out as follows:
- loosen the wheel bolts while the car is on the ground;
Pic. 221. Recommended places for installing supports under the car (marked with hatching)
- jack up the rear of the car and install jack stands. In this case, it is better not to put them under the bridge itself. On fig. 221 shows possible locations for supports;
- remove the wire connector of the brake pad wear sensor, unscrew the sensor and remove it;
Pic. 222. Fastening tape for removing the parking brake cable (must be removed before dismantling)
- remove the one shown in Fig. 222 fastening tape holding the parking brake cable;
- remove the front parking brake cable from the lever equalizer, loosen the eccentric fixing bolt in the middle of the lever, unscrew the eccentric until the cables are released. See sec. «Brake system»;
Pic. 223. Fastening the pressure regulator lever (1) and shock absorber (2)
- unscrew both shock absorbers from the rear axle. To do this, raise the axle until the shock absorbers are unloaded (pic. 223);
Pic. 224. Disconnecting the pressure regulator lever
- unscrew as shown in fig. 224, from the underside, above the bridge, the brake pressure regulator actuator lever. On fig. 223 also shows how the lever is attached;
- Disconnect the brake hose by holding the hex nut of the hose while loosening the union nut of the brake line. Then remove the hose from the mount (remove tensioner). This work should be done on both sides. Close the ends of hoses and pipelines in an appropriate way to prevent dirt from getting in;
- Disconnect the propeller shaft from the rear axle flange. Be careful - the shaft may fall as soon as the last mounting bolt is unscrewed! Tie up the shaft with wire;
- unscrew the nuts of the ladders and take out the released pads. The assistant must hold the bridge mounted on the jack;
- slowly lower the bridge on the jack, and then pull it out from under the car.
When installing the rear axle, the corresponding fastening parts shown in fig. 220 should be replaced.
During installation, you must perform the following operations:
- install the bridge under the car, approximately in the middle between the springs;
- raise the bridge to the attachment points. The center bolts of both springs must fit into the axle holes. Raise the bridge until it rests on the springs;
- install pads and stepladders of springs. If the ladders are not installed, they can be tightened by clamping in a vise. Do not apply excessive force when installing the ladders, so as not to damage the thread;
Pic. 225. Dismantling of springs
- Wrap the ladder nuts evenly crosswise and tighten to a torque of 100-120 Nm (pic. 225);
Pic. 226. Disconnecting the flexible brake hose from the pipeline of the brake system
- insert the brake hose into the pipeline, tighten the union nut to a torque of 12-16 Nm, holding the hex nut of the hose (pic. 226);
- fasten the pressure regulator lever. Tighten the nut to a torque of 30-35 Nm;
- nuts fastening the shock absorbers to the bridge to tighten the moment 75-85 Nm;
- connect the propeller shaft to the rear axle flange (75 Nm);
- insert both parking brake cables into the guides and secure with clips from the back side. Fasten the cable itself with a fastening tape;
- fasten the cable in the lever equalizer. The parking brake should be adjusted as described in sec. «Brake system»;
- bleed the brakes;
- check the oil level in the rear axle housing, if the work is completed;
- install the wheels, lower the car and tighten the wheel bolts to a torque of 160-180 Nm.
