Checking the condition of the protective covers of the drive shafts (Mercedes-Benz S-Class W140)

Protective covers of drive shafts are very important elements, as they protect constant velocity joints (CV joints) from dirt, water and other foreign objects that cause damage. External contamination of protective covers with oil and grease can lead to premature failure of the cover material, so it is recommended to periodically wash the covers with soap and water.

1. Inspect the boots for tears and cracks, as well as loose clamps (2). If signs of cracks or grease leakage are detected, the boot (1) must be replaced.



2. At the same time, check the general condition of the constant velocity joints by holding the shaft and trying to turn the wheel. Try again by holding the inner constant velocity joint and turning the shaft. Any noticeable play indicates wear in the joint, wear in the shaft grooves, or loosening of the shaft lock nut.
