Removal, disassembly and installation of the steering gear without power steering (Mercedes-Benz E-Class W123)

0
1. Set the wheels to move straight ahead. Lock the steering wheel.

2. In the engine compartment, unscrew the coupling bolts and slide it off the steering gear.

3. Apply the parking brake and lift the front of the vehicle.

4. Remove the cotter pin and unscrew the nuts securing the longitudinal steering rod and the end of the transverse steering rod to the steering knuckle.

5. Using a puller, disconnect the longitudinal rod from the bipod.

6. Mark (with paint) the relative positions of the pitman arm and the steering gear shaft. Using a puller, disconnect the pitman arm self-locking nuts from the steering gear and remove the pitman arm.

7. Unscrew the mounting bolts and remove the steering mechanism from below.

8. Wash the steering mechanism (with kerosene) and dry it.

9. Loosen the lock nut and cover bolts, then turn the adjusting screw clockwise, removing the cover and gasket at the same time. Remove the bipod shaft.

10. Remove the snap ring, unscrew the ring nut and adjusting ring and remove them. Use a pin wrench if necessary.

11. Remove the entire steering gear assembly, consisting of the worm, nut and ball drive.

12. Use a puller to press the outer bearing ring out of the steering gear housing.

13. Remove the oil seal.

14. Remove the inner bearing races from the worm shaft. If these bearings are to be reused, press them off with light blows together with the outer races; do not swap them during installation.

15. Clean and inspect the parts for wear and damage. The worm/nut/ball assembly is replaced as an assembly.

16. At the beginning of assembly, press the outer ring of the upper bearing into the adjusting ring.

17. Heat the bearing inner rings to 80°C in hot oil and install them on the worm.

18. Install the ball separator into the outer ring of the lower bearing.

19. Install the worm and nut.

20. Install the new seal onto the adjusting ring.

21. Install the upper ball bearing retainer onto the worm.

22. Using a piece of thin-walled plastic pipe as a mandrel, place it on the worm shaft to protect the seal lips, slide the adjusting ring into place and tighten it a few turns.

23. Remove the mandrel and tighten the adjusting ring so that the worm rotates with difficulty.

24. Lubricate the threads of the ring nut with thread locking compound and screw the ring into the crankcase.

25. Adjust the steering gear worm. To do this, tighten the adjusting ring with a pin key so as to eliminate the axial play and ensure easy rotation of the worm. Without changing the position of the adjusting ring, fully tighten the ring nut. Install the spring locking ring.

26. Install the adjusting screw, spacer washer and locking ring in the groove on the end of the sector shaft. The play between the adjusting screw head and the shaft groove should be eliminated by selecting a washer.

27. Install the sector gear shaft into the steering gear housing so that the central tooth of the sector enters the central recess of the worm.

28. Install a new gasket under the steering gear housing flange; install the top cover, adjusting screw into the cover hole. Place and tighten the cover mounting bolts by turning.

29. Thread the lock nut onto the adjusting screw, but do not tighten it.

30. Place the protective cover on the sector shaft splines (you can wrap it with tape) and press the seal onto the shaft using a mandrel made from a metal pipe.

31. Fill the steering gear with oil.

32. Set the steering gear to the middle position, the central point of the worm (hole) is visible in the center of the filler hole. Adjust the axial play of the gear sector shaft.

33. Wind a cord around the splined end of the sector shaft and tie a dynamometer to it. Measure the force required to turn the toothed sector shaft relative to its middle position. This force should be 5.0-7.0 kgf. Turn the adjusting screw until this value is reached, and without changing the adjustment, tighten the lock nut (lock nut).

34. Install the filler plug.

35. Install in the reverse order of removal. Pay attention to the tightening torque of the nuts and bolts. Make sure that when turning the steering control to the extreme position, the pitman arm or pendulum arm reaches the stops on the frame crossmember. If this does not happen, adjust the length of the transverse steering rod.
