- hydraulic fluid approved for use by Mercedes-Benz or ATF oil. ATF = automatic transmission fluid.
Examination
Conditions for performing the check:
- the car must stand level (horizontal) surfaces);
- the engine must be turned off;
- the temperature of the oil in the power steering should be about +20°C.
1. Unscrew the cover 1 of the power steering reservoir 2 turns and remove it together with the measuring probe (see illustration).

2. Wipe the dipstick with a clean, lint-free cloth.
(Article obtained from this portal MercedesMan.ru)
3. Inspect the O-ring on the power steering reservoir cap and make sure it is not damaged. Replace the O-ring if necessary.
4. Screw the lid on, making sure it is not tilted.
5. Unscrew the cap again and check the fluid level. The power steering fluid level should be in the range indicated in the illustration by the number 2. This range is indicated on the dipstick by the number "20°". The fluid is considered cold if its temperature does not exceed +20°C. When the fluid is hot, its level should be in range 3 with the designation (+60°) (see illustration).

If necessary, add hydraulic fluid to the power steering reservoir. Do not shake the hydraulic fluid before filling, because this will create air bubbles. Pour the fluid into the reservoir slowly, avoiding the formation of air bubbles. Be sure to fill only with fresh fluid, because even the slightest contamination can damage the power steering.
6. Screw the lid on without allowing it to slant. Make sure the lid is screwed on correctly.
7. Start the engine and, while the engine is running, turn the steering wheel from side to side until it stops. This will remove air from the hydraulic drive of the power steering.
If the fluid level in the power steering drops, you should contact a workshop to check its tightness and eliminate the leak. Replenishing the fluid volume will not lead to the desired result.
