Steering Cuffs — Check (Mercedes-Benz A-Class W168)

Warning! Jacking up a vehicle or placing it on jack stands is dangerous. Therefore, it is recommended that you familiarize yourself with the safety precautions set out in Chapter "Jacking up a car".


1. Place the front of the vehicle on jack stands.

2. Vehicles with diesel engines. Remove the engine splash guard, see the relevant chapter.

3. Illuminate the right and left cuffs 3 with a flashlight and inspect them for damage (see illustration). Pay special attention to traces of oil on the cuffs themselves and around them.

4. Inspect the cuffs and make sure that there are no cracks, abrasions or dents.

5. Turn the steering wheel all the way to one side and then to the other so that the steering wheel seals stretch and can be checked for leaks in this state.

Caution! When checking, do not press the ribs of the cuffs, because this will damage the plastic of the cuff, which will subsequently lead to a leak in the cuff.


6. Check the fit of the cuff fastening clamps.

7. Vehicles with diesel engine: Replace the engine splash guard.

8. Lower the car onto its wheels.
