Removal and installation the steering column lock (Mercedes-Benz E-Class W123)

To replace a faulty lock, you need to remove the entire steering column and drill out the locking pin.

1. Remove both lower instrument panel covers.

2. Remove the instrument panel.

3. Disconnect the connector from the ignition switch.

4. Bend back the tabs and remove the ignition switch frame from the instrument panel.

5. On early models, remove the plastic cap.

6. Remove the lock cylinder by turning the ignition key to position "I", then insert a piece of wire (diameter 1.25 mm) into the cutout of the lock cylinder, unscrew the cap and remove the lock cylinder. Remove the wire, turn the key to the "0" position and remove it. Remove the cap, insert the key and turn to the "I" position and install the lock cylinder in the housing, pressing the lock. Disconnect the connector.

7. Loosen the steering column lock mounting bolt.

8. With the ignition key in position "I", press the locking pin with a small screwdriver and turn the lock slightly, then turn the key to position "0" and remove the key.



9. Remove the lock from the steering column.

10. Insert and turn the key to position "I", remove the ignition switch or lock cylinder (depends on the configuration).

11. Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.
