Compressing the valve spring with a special tool
Removing crackers from the end of the valve
Removing the upper spring plate
Removing the valve spring
Removing the oil seal
Removing the lower spring seat
Removing the valve through the combustion chamber
Storage of elements of one valve in a plastic bag
1. Remove the cylinder head.
2. Remove the intake and exhaust manifolds.
3. Remove the valve drive mechanism, hydraulic tappets and camshaft.
4. Unscrew the spark plugs.
5. Unscrew the thermostat housing from the cylinder head.
6. Using a valve spring compressor, compress each spring and remove the cotters from the valve end. Remove the spring compressor and remove the spring cup and spring (see fig. Compressing the valve spring with a special tool, Removing crackers from the end of the valve, Removing the upper spring plate, Removing the valve spring).
7. Using pliers, remove the valve stem seal from the valve stem using pliers (see fig. Removing the oil seal).
8. When the valve spring is compressed and the spring cup is not removed from the cotters, it is necessary to hit the spring cup with a hammer through a block of wood, which will release the cotters.
9. Remove the valve through the combustion chamber. Store each valve in a separate plastic bag along with the spring plate, spring, spring seat and crackers for further installation in their places (see fig. Removal of the valve through the combustion chamber, Storage of elements of one valve in a plastic bag).
SOHC 6-cylinder petrol engines
Remove the spring compressor and remove the spring cup and spring.
7. Being careful, use pliers to remove the valve stem cap from the valve stem.
8. When the valve spring is compressed and the spring cup is not removed from the cotters, it is necessary to hit the spring cup with a hammer through a block of wood, which will release the cotters.
9. Remove the valve through the combustion chamber. Store each valve in a separate plastic bag along with the spring plate, spring, spring seat and crackers for further installation in their places.
6-cylinder DOHC gasoline engines
Remove the spring compressor and remove the spring cup and spring. Early models had two springs per valve.
Diesel engines
1. Remove the cylinder head.
2. Remove the intake and exhaust manifolds.
3. Remove the valve drive mechanism, hydraulic tappets and camshaft.
4. Unscrew the glow plugs if necessary.
5. Unscrew the thermostat housing from the cylinder head.
6. Using a valve spring compressor, compress each spring and remove the cotters from the valve end.
