Section of the front wheel hub
1 - rotary fist; 2 - lower ball joint; 3 - shield; 4 - brake disc; 5 - stuffing box; 6 - inner bearing; 7 - hub cap; 8 - contact spring; 9 - hub nut (clamp nut); 10 - outer bearing; 11 - hub
hub lock
1 - clamping nut; 2 - trunnion; 3 - hub; 4 - bearing
1. Apply the parking brake, raise the front of the vehicle and place it on a stand (support), remove the wheel.
2. With light blows of a hammer and prying with a screwdriver, remove the hub cap, and then the contact spring of the radio interference suppressor.
3. Remove the brake caliper without disconnecting the brake hose, move the caliper to the side and secure it to the vehicle.
4. Use a socket wrench to loosen the bolt and remove the jam nut.
5. Remove the hub and brake disc from the stub axle using a puller and a soft metal hammer if necessary.
6. Take out an epiploon, remove a ring and a separator of the external bearing.
7. Take out an epiploon, remove a ring and a separator of the internal bearing.
8. Using a soft metal mandrel, press the bearing outer races off the hub.
9. Rinse the parts with kerosene and dry. Check them out.
10. Check up surfaces of a rotary fist, especially under a cuff; if they are not in perfect condition, replace the steering knuckle.
11. Thoroughly clean and wash the wheel bearings and hub.
12. Check up a condition of a nest under bearings in a nave.
13. Check up a condition of external rings of bearings, whether there are no wear marks, shells on them. The rolling surface must be smooth and grey.
14. If the rings have dents from the rollers or have a rolling path from light brown to blue due to overheating, then these bearings must be replaced.
15. Check that the cone rollers rotate easily. Check that the end surfaces of the rollers are in good condition. Rust on the bearings indicates damage to the seals. In this case, it is necessary to replace the wheel bearing and cuff.
Note. When replacing wheel bearings, both bearings must be changed at the same time.
16. Carefully press in both outer races with equal force.
17. Fill the hub and bearings with 45 g of high-temperature grease.
18. Also fill the baskets with rollers with grease so that the free space between the rollers is filled with grease. Install the rollers.
19. Fill the new seal with grease, and apply a thin layer of sealant to the seating surface. Press the cuff into place with a wooden mandrel.
20. Fill the front wheel hub with grease residue.
21. Install the brake disc and caliper.
Adjustment
1. If necessary, depress the brake pads to ensure free rotation of the disc.
2. Loosen the clamping nut bolt.
3. While tightening the lug nut, rotate the wheel hub at the same time until the hub almost stops turning. Then loosen the clamping nut 1/3 of a turn and tap the end of the pin with a plastic hammer to release the tension.
4. Tighten the clamp bolt with a socket wrench.
5. Using a dial indicator, check the axial runout of the bearings, which should correspond to 0.01-0.02 mm.
6. Install the RFI suppressor contact spring, fill the hub cap with refractory grease up to the shoulder (about 15 g) and put it firmly with a hammer on the hub.
7. Install the wheel, tighten the mounting bolts to a torque of 11.0 kgf·m, lower the front of the car.
