On fig. 317 shows a starter device used on diesel engines. Specially designed for diesel vehicles, it is equipped with a planetary gear, which made it possible to make the armature and the entire starter motor shorter. Starters usually have a long service life. If the starter has been in operation for a long time, it makes no sense to repair it. For replacement, it is better to choose a serviceable starter repaired at a Mercedes or Bosch branded technical station. At the same time, the old starter can be exchanged.
Frequently occurring minor starter malfunctions can be eliminated without replacing the entire unit.
Replacing the traction relay
For this you need:
- disconnect the connecting wire between the traction relay and the starter;
- on the front side of the relay, unscrew the mounting bolts and, disengaging the starter drive engagement lever, remove the traction relay;
- Install new relay in reverse order.
Brush replacement
To do this, do the following:
- unscrew and remove the cover from the back of the starter;
- unscrew the two bolts securing the collector bearing cover;
- use a screwdriver to pry the locking clip at the end of the armature shaft, remove it, remove small parts, and then remove the cover. If necessary, press to remove with a screwdriver. Save spacers;
- remove both brushes from the holder and remove the brush holder. The brushes can be screwed or soldered. If they are soldered, you should use a soldering iron. Solder or screw on new brushes. Assemble the starter in reverse order.
Note. If the starter has been in operation for a long time, it is better not to repair it, but to replace it with a new or serviceable used one. You can also pick up a starter in a specialized workshop of Bosch.
