Starter — removal and installation (Mercedes-Benz A-Class W168)

0
Contents: Removal ↡ Installation ↡
To start an internal combustion engine, a small electric motor, a starter, is needed.

In order for the engine to start at all, the starter must spin it up to at least 300 rpm. This is only possible if the starter works perfectly and the battery has sufficient charge.

Removal

1. Disconnect the ground (-) wire terminal from the negative battery terminal, after turning off the ignition.

2. Insulate the battery terminals to avoid accidental short circuit.

Warning! When you disconnect the battery from the radio, the security code is deleted, as well as all automatic settings on the radio station. If the code is unknown or not written down, then the radio can only be put into operation by resorting to the help of a workshop or the manufacturer of the radio. Therefore, make sure in advance that the code is known.

3. Lower the power unit together with the suspension brackets to remove the starter, see the relevant chapter.

4. Unscrew the nuts securing terminals 30 and 50 on the starter and disconnect the wires.

5. Unscrew the two bolts 2 securing the starter and remove the starter by pushing it down from the engine compartment.

Installation

6. Install the starter in place and secure it by tightening the bolts to a torque of 20 Nm.

7. Fasten the electrical wires to terminals 30 and 50 of the starter and screw on the nuts.

8. Install the power unit in place, see the relevant chapter.

9. Connect the negative (-) cable terminal to the battery.

10. Set up the electronic clock.

11. Enter the security code into the radio receiver.
