Generator — removal and installation (Mercedes-Benz A-Class W168)

Contents: Removal ↡ Installation ↡
Depending on the model and configuration of the vehicle, generators of different capacities can be installed.

For example, generators installed on cars with diesel engines are more powerful than those installed on cars with gasoline engines.

Attention! If additional electrical equipment is installed, it is necessary to check whether the existing generator has sufficient power. If necessary, install a more powerful generator. If it is necessary to repair the generator, it is necessary to remove the engine together with the front suspension supports.

The alternating current produced by the generator is converted into direct current by a rectifier located on the diode board.

The voltage regulator changes the charging current according to the battery discharge level by switching the excitation current on and off. At the same time, the voltage regulator maintains a constant operating voltage (about 14 V), regardless of the generator rotation frequency.

When working on a generator, there are certain requirements that must be followed to prevent damage to the electrical system.

1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal from the battery.

Warning! When you disconnect the battery from the radio, the security code is deleted, as well as all automatic settings on the radio station. Therefore, first read the provisions of Chapter "Battery - removal and installation".

2. Do not disconnect the battery or voltage regulator while the engine is running.

3. Do not remove the generator while the battery is connected.

4. Disconnect the battery when performing electric welding work.

Removal

5. Disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal from the battery.

Warning! When you disconnect the battery from the radio, the security code is deleted, as well as all automatic settings on the radio station. Therefore, first read the provisions of Chapter "Battery - removal and installation".

6. Remove the V-belt from the generator and other auxiliary drive units, see the relevant chapter.

Cars with air conditioning

Warning! Do not open the air conditioner refrigerant circulation system. Contact with the coolant on the skin causes frostbite. If the refrigerant comes into contact with the skin, rinse the skin with cold water immediately for at least 15 minutes. The refrigerant is colorless, odorless, and heavier than air. If the refrigerant leaks, people in the area of the floor on which the vehicle is installed or in rooms located below the leak may suffocate.

7. Unscrew the four bolts that secure the air conditioner compressor 1 to the cylinder block, remove it and secure it to the body without disconnecting the refrigerant circulation hoses from the compressor (see illustration). Do not allow air conditioner hoses to become kinked or damaged.

7. Unscrew the four bolts that secure the air conditioner compressor 1 to the cylinder block,…

8. Disconnect 2 wires B+ and D+ from the generator (see illustration 14.7).

9. Unscrew the two generator mounting bolts and remove it by lowering it down.

Installation

10. Install the generator in place, screw in the generator mounting bolts and tighten them to 20 Nm.

11. Secure the wires to terminals B+ and D+ with nuts.

12. Install the air conditioning compressor by screwing in the four mounting bolts and tightening them to 20 Nm.

13. Lay the V-belt.

14. Connect the negative (-) battery cable terminal.

15. Set up the electronic clock.

16. Enter the security code into the radio receiver.
