Possible starter malfunctions (Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 903)

The recommendations provided here will help you solve the problem of troubleshooting on site.

When turning the key in the ignition switch, the starter turns slowly, does not start, or it turns a little and stops. If the indicator lights are dim or go out, first check the battery charge. A disconnected or oxidized starter power wire or a starter short circuit to ground may be caused by the following reasons. If the battery was disconnected before, its terminals may not be connected properly. Otherwise, to start the engine, you should use a jump starter or towing.

If the warning light continues to light and clicking sounds are heard in the engine compartment, the traction relay rod may be stuck. You can try to tap the traction relay with a metal object - as a rule, the rod is released. If this does not bring success, it can be assumed that the brushes are worn out or the contacts of the traction relay are dirty. In this case, it is necessary to remove the starter and replace the traction relay and/or brushes. If the indicator light is on, but the starter does not make any sounds at all, you should check the connections between the battery and the starter.

If you hear the starter turning, but the engine crankshaft does not turn, you can assume that the traction relay, drive mechanism, or the teeth of the drive gear and flywheel are damaged, as a result of which they do not engage. In this case, engage first gear, move the car forward slightly and start the starter again. If the attempt is unsuccessful, replace the starter.

If the starter continues to rotate after the engine has started, although the key in the ignition switch has been released, it is possible that the traction relay is "stuck", i.e. the contacts do not open (the ignition switch may also be faulty). If this happens, you must stop the engine immediately.

If the drive gear continues to rotate after the engine is started (identified by a howling sound), perhaps the drive lever does not return to its original position or the gear itself is stuck in the ring gear. In this case, it will probably be necessary to install a new starter and/or flywheel ring gear. In any case, it is necessary to dismantle and check the starter.
