Fuel injection pumps and injectors are very sensitive to contamination of diesel fuel. A fuel filter serves to clean it. Every 60,000 km its filter element must be replaced. Figure 166 shows the position of the fuel filter in the engine compartment. When replacing it, you need to follow the drawing 167. Figure 168 shows the parts of the fuel filter on a 2.9 L engine and its installation. The fuel filter element must be replaced as follows:
- remove the air filter housing (on a turbocharged diesel engine);
- unscrew cartridge 1 from below (see figure 167) filter. In this case, you should place a container under the leaking fuel. If only the filter element is being replaced, screw in a new cartridge;
- to remove the filter housing, unscrew bolts 4 and remove fasteners 3 and 5;
- disconnect fuel hoses 6 and 7 from filter housing 2. Also unscrew fuel supply hose 8;
- unscrew the bolts securing the filter housing to the cylinder head and remove it.

Installation is carried out in reverse order. Tighten the housing to the cylinder head with a torque of 23 Nm, and fasten the fuel hoses to the filter with a torque of 9 Nm.
