Removal the lower return spring of the parking brake shoes

Removal the brake pads as an assembly from the rear parking brake mechanism

1. The parking brake operates independently of the hydraulic brake system. It uses drum-type brake shoes, and the inner part of the brake disc is used as a brake drum.
2. Remove the rear brake disc and mark the location of all brake components (see fig. Location of brake components of the parking brake on the left side of the vehicle).
3. Using pliers, remove the brake shoe retaining spring plate by pressing the plate and turning it 90°. Remove the spring from the brake shield. Access the springs through the holes for the wheel mounting bolts in the rear wheel hub flange (see Fig. Removing the springs holding the brake pads).
4. Carefully remove the lower return spring of the parking brake shoes. Note the position of the spring as it is not symmetrical (see Fig. Removing the lower return spring of the parking brake shoes).
5. Remove the lower ends of the brake shoes from the sliding mechanism and, moving upward, remove the brake shoes assembly (see Fig. Removing the brake pads assembly from the rear parking brake mechanism).
6. Mark the location of the brake shoes, then remove the upper return spring and separate the brake shoes from the adjuster bar.
7. Check the brake pads for wear and dirt and replace them if necessary. It is also recommended to replace the return springs. Mercedes-Benz does not regulate the maximum wear of the parking brake pads, but the brake pads must be replaced if the friction layer thickness of the pad is less than 1.5 mm.

8. Clean and check the condition of the adjusting bar and sliding mechanism and replace it if necessary. Lubricate the threads of the adjusting bar and the sliding surfaces of the sliding mechanism.
Installation
Installing the lower return spring

When installing the lower return spring, the end with the larger grip should be positioned on the upper brake shoe.
1. Clean the brake shield and apply a thin layer of high-temperature grease to the contact areas of the brake pads with the brake shield. Avoid getting grease on the working surfaces of the brake pads.
2. Assemble the brake shoes and adjusting bar. The adjusting ring should be located at the front of the brake mechanism. Install the upper return spring on the brake shoes.
3. Install the brake shoe assembly into place and align the lower ends of the shoes with the sliding mechanism.
4. Install the lower return spring. The end of the spring with the larger grip should be connected to the upper brake shoe (see Fig. Installing the lower return spring).
5. Check that the brake pads are positioned correctly on the brake shield and secure them with the retaining springs.
6. Center the brake pads.
7. Install the brake disc and adjust the parking brake.
