The models presented in this publication are equipped with 2.3-litre and 2.9-litre Mercedes-Benz diesel engines. The 208D, 308D and 408D models are equipped with a four-cylinder engine producing 58 kW (79 hp) at 3,800 min⁻¹, which belongs to the 601 engine family. Other models are equipped with a 2.9-liter turbocharged engine. In this case, we are talking about a five-cylinder engine, which is structurally similar to a four-cylinder engine. It produces 90 kW (122 hp) at 3,800 min⁻¹ and belongs to the 602 family. Later, another engine with a power of 75 kW (102 hp) at 3400 min⁻¹ was added to this family (models 210D, 310D and 410D). This engine is turbocharged and has intercooled air.
All of the engines listed have proven themselves well in previous models, so they are also installed in other Mercedes-Benz models. The last two digits in the model designation serve as an identification feature: for example, designations ending in "08" indicate that the car has a 2.3-liter engine. Designations ending in "12" indicate the presence of a 2.9-liter engine.

The 210D, 310D and 410D models are equipped with 2.9 litre engines producing 75 kW (102 hp). The numeric designations following the model numbers provide additional vehicle identification required by the workshop.
The engines described are also used in minibuses, which, depending on the engine type and number of seats, are designated TL12C, TL13, TL14C, TL16 and TL17C.
Nowadays, in many countries, it is possible to purchase various configurations of the car models specified in this manual. Let's look at some of them.
- The 208D car is produced in normal and "extended" versions.
- The 210D/212D vehicles are produced in normal and "extended" versions.
- The 308D car is produced in normal, "short", "medium" and "long" versions.
- The 310D/312D cars are produced in normal, "short", "medium" and "long" versions.
- The 408D car is produced in normal and "extended" versions.
- The 410D/412D vehicles are produced in normal and "extended" versions.
The front suspension is made on a single transverse leaf spring. The lower wishbone has ball joints on the outer sides. The telescopic shock absorber strut is bolted to the steering knuckle at the bottom and to the car body at the top. The anti-roll bar, which connects both wishbones, completes the front wheel suspension design.
The rear axle is unified with previous models and is a rigid beam suspended on two leaf springs and two hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers. The rear wheels are equipped with disc brakes. Disc brakes on the front and rear wheels, together with a vacuum brake booster, form the vehicle's braking system. The vacuum required for the operation of the brake booster is created by a vacuum pump.
Depending on the vehicle model or at the customer's request, the car may be equipped with an anti-lock braking system (ABS). In addition, the car may be equipped with an automatic brake differential (ABD). The anti-lock braking system and automatic brake differential (ABS/ABD) are installed as standard on all cars with a 122 hp engine and minibuses. The vehicle is controlled by a rack and pinion steering system with hydraulic booster.
