Complex operations only on the engine removed from the vehicle (Mercedes-Benz E-Class W123)

0
The following work is only possible after removing the engine from the vehicle:
  • removing pistons and connecting rods;
  • removing the crankshaft connecting rod bearings;
  • removing the crankshaft main bearings;
  • crankshaft removal;
  • replacing the rear crankshaft oil seal.

Preparing engines for disassembly

It is recommended to disassemble the engine on a stand; if you don't have one, you can place the engine on a sturdy workbench at a comfortable height for working. If you don't have a workbench, use a wooden board or tarpaulin laid on the floor. Avoid working on concrete floors because of possible sand ingress.

Clean the engine with kerosene and dry it beforehand. As you remove the parts, wash them in a kerosene bath. However, it is not recommended to immerse parts with oil channels in kerosene, as this will complicate their subsequent cleaning. It is best to pre-blow the oil channels with compressed air.

It is recommended to have "set cash boxes" for small and fastening parts, which will bring convenience during reverse assembly of the engine and eliminate "extra" parts. If possible, put the removed bolts and washers back in their places. Do not throw away old gaskets, they will serve as a template for making new ones if you do not have standard ones. Save the old parts as samples for purchasing new ones.
