Vehicle and engine identification

Using the vehicle identification number (body number), it is possible to determine all the data inherent to the vehicle.

Identification number 1 is stamped on the dividing wall of the engine compartment (see illustration 2.0).



In addition, identification number 1 is indicated on plate 4, which is located under the latch (bracket) 5 of the passenger side door lock (see illustration 2.0a).



Decoding the vehicle identification number (body numbers)



WDB 168 031 1 J 070341

Manufacturer's designation:

WDB = Daimler-Benz AG or Daimler-Chrysler AG

168 = car type: A-class/414 - VANEO

031 = model range: 0 - cars with a short body; 1 - cars with a long body.
  • 3 - with petrol engine;
  • 1 - 1.4 liter engine.

1 = left-hand drive cars


J = place of production Rastatt

070341 = serial number

Engine Number Location



Engine number 1 is stamped on the cylinder block 2 at the joint near the oil pan 3 (see illustration 2.0b).



For four-cylinder petrol engines, the engine number is stamped on the rear wall of the cylinder block on the left side (see arrow in illustration 2.0a).

Decoding the engine number



166 940 30 072313

166 = petrol engine, 668 = diesel engine

940 = 1.4L engine

30 = not used

072313 = serial number
