Contents: All engines ↡ Diesel engines ↡

All engines

Cars with manual transmission

1. Apply the parking brake.

2. Press the clutch pedal all the way down and hold it in this position.

3. Move the gearshift lever to neutral. Depressing the clutch pedal makes it easier to start the engine in cold weather.

4. Cars with automatic clutch: Turn the ignition key to position 2 or press the brake pedal.

5. Move the gear shift lever to neutral.

6. Vehicles with automatic transmission: Move the gearshift lever to position "P" or "N".

7. Press the foot brake pedal and hold it in this position.

Warning! Operate the starter continuously for no more than 30 seconds. Longer operation of the starter may cause it to overheat, as well as the corresponding electrical wires to heat up.

Petrol engines

8. Turn the key in the ignition switch and turn on the starter. Do not press the accelerator pedal. As soon as the engine starts, release the ignition key.

If the engine does not start within 5 seconds, press the accelerator pedal and continue the starting process.

If the engine does not start after a second attempt, or stalls after starting, try starting again with the gas pedal half-pressed.

If necessary, try again by fully depressing the gas pedal.

If the engine is hot, press the gas pedal slowly.

9. Start driving immediately. Warm up the engine only in severe frost for about 30 seconds.

Information copied from the website MercedesMan.ru

Warning! Frequent attempts to start the engine, one after another, can damage the catalytic converter, because unburned gasoline gets into the catalytic converter and when heated, it burns with a detonation effect.

Diesel engines

Starting a cold engine

10. Turn on the ignition and wait until the preheating indicator light goes out.

11. Start the engine, but do not press the accelerator pedal.

If the engine starts to run intermittently, keep the starter on (maximum 20 seconds) until the engine starts to run smoothly. If the engine does not start, return the ignition key to position "0" and after a pause of approximately 30 seconds, repeat the process of warming up and starting the engine.

Attention! During the warm-up procedure, do not turn on large consumers of on-board current. Otherwise, this will lead to unnecessary loads on the battery.

Please note: Due to the good cold starting characteristics of the direct injection engine, fuel preheating is only necessary at air temperatures below 0°C.

Starting a warm engine

The engine can be started immediately. Preheating is not necessary. Do not press the accelerator pedal.
