Vito Viano vehicles use a rack and pinion steering with hydraulic booster. The rack is integrated with the hydraulic cylinder rod.
In the housing of the drive gear shaft of the steering mechanism, there is a hydraulic distributor valve system, which acts as a hydromechanical follow-up system. This servo system actuates the power steering hydraulic cylinder in strict accordance with the movements of the steering wheel.
The rack is connected to the steering knuckles of the front wheels by means of two steering rods.
At the inner end of the steering rod there is a spherical joint, the body of which is screwed into a threaded hole in the end of the rack. At the outer end of the tie rod there is a spherical joint, commonly referred to as the tie rod end. With its threaded hole, the tie rod end is screwed onto the threaded end of the rod and fixed with a lock nut. In this case, it is possible to adjust the length of the steering rod, which is used when setting the toe of the front wheels.
Removal and installation of the steering mechanism
1. Set the steering wheel in position.
2. Remove the air filter housing, moving straight ahead.
3. Drain the oil from the GU supply tank.
Then remove the remaining oil from the steering mechanism through the return hose, alternately turning the steering wheel from one extreme position to another.
4. Remove the bolts (1) (pic. VN 6.002).
5. Support the engine without lifting it.
6. Disconnect the right and left steering tips (5) from steering knuckles (pic. VN 6.003).
7. Remove the protective pallet of a motor compartment.
8. Loosen nuts (7 and 8).
9. Remove clips (9).
10. Disconnect the hydraulic pipes (11 and 12).
11. Disconnect the universal joint of the steering shaft (13) from the steering gear (14).
12. Remove the bolts (16), while paying attention to the different lengths of the bolts.
13. Support the subframe (17).
14. Remove the bolts (18).
15. Remove the steering gear through the left side of the vehicle. Do not turn the steering gear.
16. Installation is carried out in the reverse order.
