Checking the drive belts (Mercedes-Benz Vario 814)

The alternator drive belt is shown in the figure 1.1. The length of the alternator drive belt for engine 602.984 with air conditioning is 2120 mm; engine 602.984 without air conditioning - 2050 mm; engine 602.985 with air conditioning - 2415 mm; engine 602.985 without air conditioning - 2245 mm; engines 904.923/936 without air conditioning - 1420 mm; engines 904.923/936 with air conditioning 2040 mm.

1. Turn the ignition key to the "OFF" position.

2. Place the gear shift lever in the "N" position on a manual transmission (in the "P" position on an automatic transmission).

3. Tighten the parking brake lever.

4. Check the alternator drive belt for damage. If damage is found, the belt must be replaced. Main damages to the belt:
  • Wear of the edges of the V-shaped ribs of belt B and exposure of the cord in the grooves of belt C; on new belts the ribs have a trapezoidal shape A (figure 1.2);

  • f-belt rib break (figure 1.3);

  • Lateral damage to the ribs, extrusion of rubber mass outward J (figure 1.4);

  • Damage to the outer part of the D belt and transverse damage to the E belt ribs (figure 1.5);

  • Cord breakage, its exit from the G and cord rubbing off H (figure 1.6);

  • Squeezing out of rubber mass on the outer part of the L belt and contamination or adhesion of small stones in the grooves of the M belt (figure 1.7);
