Checking and topping up the coolant
Caution! Do not open the radiator cap if the temperature in the system is above 90°C. After cooling down for a while, open the cap slowly, releasing the pressure in small doses.
1. Unscrew and remove the radiator cap 1 (figure 1.8).
Figure 1.8. Unscrew and remove the radiator cap (1).
2. Check the coolant level and top up if necessary, provided that the temperature of the coolant does not exceed 50°C. The coolant level is determined by the marks on the radiator filler neck. Before adding fluid, check its anti-corrosion properties. To do this, drain some liquid through the radiator drain cock.
3. If the corrosion resistance is low, the coolant must be replaced.
4. Adjust the liquid level. The volumes of the engine cooling system are given in Table 1.1
5. Install the radiator cap.
Table 1.1. Cooling system volumes
| Parameters | Engine 602.984/985 | Engine 904.908/923 |
| Total volume, l | 10.0 | 13.0 |
| Antifreeze capacity (freezing point -37°C) | 5.55 | 6.5 |
| Antifreeze capacity (freezing point -45°C) | 6.1 | 7.2 |
