Put the hood upright (see "Removing the engine").
Drain engine oil.
Drain coolant (section 5.1).
Disconnect the ground wire from the battery.
Remove all accessory drive belts.
Remove the generator together with the mount. Remove the ignition distributor.
Remove power steering pump and set aside with hoses.
Remove the pulley from the crankshaft along with the damper and bushing.
Remove coolant pump (pump).
Remove expansion tank.
Remove oil pump.
Remove the oil level indicator tube.
Unscrew the M8 bolts securing the cylinder heads in the opening of the drive chain (3 on the left cylinder head and 2 on the right).
On vehicles with air conditioning, remove the two A/C compressor tensioner bolts and remove the drive belts.
Remove the A/C compressor mounting bracket and set the compressor aside.
Remove the crankshaft seal. To do this, screw a self-tapping bolt into the stuffing box and use a screwdriver to remove the stuffing box.
Unscrew and remove the drive cover, at the same time remove the oil pump drive chain from the sprocket on the crankshaft. When removing the cover, do not damage the cylinder head gasket; if the gasket is damaged, the cylinder head will also have to be removed.
Detachable surfaces of the drive cover and cylinder block are cleaned of sealant residues. There is no gasket between the drive cover and the cylinder block.
Turn the cap over and replace the O-ring for the coolant passage. When installing the drive cover, consider the following:
Apply a layer of sealing paste to the split surface of the drive cover.
Apply a layer of grease to the cylinder head gasket.
Install the drive cover onto the sprocket on the crankshaft.
Install and tighten the M8 cylinder head bolts.
Place a new oil seal on the crankshaft and carefully press it into the drive cover.
The rest of the work is done in reverse order. Start the engine and check all joints for leaks.
