Fuel filter — removal and installation (Mercedes-Benz E-Class W210)

Contents: Replacing the fuel filter ↡ Checking the fuel coarse filter ↡
The fuel equipment of a diesel engine is very sensitive to contamination in the fuel, especially the presence of water. Water gets into the fuel mainly due to condensation in the fuel tank of a car or in a cistern at a petrol station. Contamination must be filtered before the fuel gets to the injection pump.

This is provided by the fuel filter. Dirt particles settle on the filter element. And below, in the free space of the filter, water can settle - it is heavier than fuel. For all diesel models, the fuel filter must be changed every 90,000 km.

2. Unscrew the filter cartridge (Fig. 4.90) using a strap wrench (for example, for an oil filter), unscrew the large nut on top.

3. Remove the cartridge with the filter (do not throw away with household waste! Dispose of in special places).

4. Insert the new cartridge and screw with the new seal.

5. Tighten the bolt and chuck.

Checking the fuel coarse filter

Depending on the operating conditions, it is necessary to check the coarse filter for damage every 30,000 km and clean it if necessary. Usually it is sufficient to replace the coarse and fine filters every 90,000 km or every 4 years.
