The fuel tank of the Mercedes E-class is made of steel and is located behind the rear seat (Fig. 4.85), in station wagons it is a little further, under the luggage compartment (Fig. 4.86). Depending on the car model, the tank capacity varies. Thus, the sedan tank holds 65 liters, and the station wagon tank - 70 liters of diesel fuel, with about 8 liters being a reserve.
A fuel reserve sensor is installed on the upper side of the tank.
The fuel supply and outlet pipes run under the car's underbody to the engine. They are made of pressure-resistant material and are equipped with clamps or screw-on clamps.
Ventilation system
For reliable fuel supply, tank ventilation is important to avoid creating a vacuum. When refuelling, sufficient air must escape from the tank. In addition, the tank must be cooled. Air supply and exhaust pipes are inserted into the filler nipple of the tank. The air removal pipe is connected to the expansion tank, which binds and condenses the escaping fuel vapors.
