Windscreen wiper and washer (Mercedes-Benz E-Class W210)

Clean windows are an important condition for road safety. A windshield wiper ensures good visibility in all road conditions. Its long arm covers 88% of the glass surface and provides a better view than the previous model (86%). Another innovation is the electronically controlled windshield wiper delay system, previously installed on the S-Class, which automatically responds to the wiper interval depending on the speed or road conditions.

"Rain sensor"

If desired, the car can be equipped with a so-called "rain sensor". It is installed on the inside of the windshield. Two optoelectronic elements react to the strength and intensity of the rain and issue a command to increase (decrease) frequency of the windshield wiper. The sensor is activated by the combined switch for controlling the windshield wiper, high beam and turn signal. The driver can always pay more attention to the road if the problem of good visibility is solved for him by the "rain sensor". The new Mercedes E-class is the first production car equipped with such a system.

Wear of windshield wiper blades

To ensure that it performs its functions, the rubber wiper blade must be pressed tightly against the glass. Its service life is limited.

Over time, the brush wears out, atmospheric influences and ultraviolet rays destroy the structure of the rubber. In addition, when driving, microscopic cracks and scratches form on the windshield, which affect the quality of glass cleaning. Therefore, it is advisable to replace the windshield wiper blades with new ones in spring and autumn.

You can do almost all the maintenance work on the windshield wiper yourself, in most cases you will only need a screwdriver. If you have come to the conclusion that the windshield wiper malfunction is in the wiring, refer to the section "Electrical equipment".

Checking the windshield wiper and washer

1. Press the combination switch handle on the left under the steering wheel. This should activate the washer pump and the water jets on the hood should spray water onto the windshield.

2. Turn the handle - the wiper blade will work. If it does not cleanly remove all the streaks of water from the windshield, then it is time to change it. As a rule, the blades need to be replaced every six months.
