Sequence of works
Time shown is 30 min.
1. First, brake sharply when driving at low speed.
2. Equal length brake marks from the wheels indicate simultaneous operation of the brake mechanisms. The check also makes sense on a car with ABS, since the system does not operate at speeds below 8 km/h.
3. Perform the same test with the parking brake. While pressing the pedal, simultaneously pull and hold the release handle.
4. To test the brakes at high speed, choose a road with a smooth surface.
5. At 50 km/h, release the steering wheel (keep your hands ready) and brake smoothly first, and then sharply until you come to a complete stop.
6. When you fully press the brake pedal, you should feel vibrations from the ABS system. This is normal.
7. If the car pulls to the left when braking like this, one of the right brake mechanisms is faulty. The car pulls towards the more effectively braked wheels. See the reasons below. "Possible malfunctions of the brake system, their causes and methods of elimination".
8. Allow the vehicle to roll freely down a slight incline to ensure that the wheels are not locked.
9. After driving, check the temperature of the wheel with your hand. If one of them is hotter than the others, this may indicate that the brake pads of the caliper are dragging or the parking brake is locked.
10. With the vehicle raised, check which wheel does not have enough free play.
11. Turn on the ignition and release the parking brake on a level surface. Now check the functionality of the two electrical contacts on the brake fluid reservoir one by one by pressing the rubber cap. The signal lamp should light up.
12. It is recommended to check the brakes on a stand every 30,000 km. The settings of the BAS, ASR and ETS systems must be known.
Attention! If you have any doubts about the brakes' functionality, contact the service station immediately. Follow these recommendations:
- 1. Your safety and the safety of other road users depend on the serviceability of the brake system. Regular checks of the brake system are the best guarantee of safety.
- 2. It is recommended to remove the wheels from time to time and check the condition of the brake pads. Servicing the brake system is not a very difficult task. Most work on the brake system requires no more skill than removing a wing or shock absorber.
- 3. Nevertheless, you should undertake any work only if you are completely confident in your abilities. In case of doubt, it is better to contact the service station.
- 4. Do not attempt to repair the ABS unit or system connections yourself. These jobs, as well as ABS diagnostics, are a task for specialists.
