Checking and replacing the drive chain (Mercedes-Benz E-Class W124)

0
Contents: Examination ↡ Replacement ↡

Examination

1. Remove the upper drive chain cover.

2. Remove the cylinder head cover.

3. Turn the engine crankshaft using the crankshaft pulley mounting bolt and check the condition of the chain along its entire length. If the chain makes increased noise when the engine is running or there is a large axial play of the chain on the sprocket, the chain must be replaced. If there is wear on the chain rollers, the chain must also be replaced.

Replacement

Attention! When removing the chain, it is necessary to use an emery wheel or vulcanite to cut off the protruding caps of one of the chain links.

Grinding off the rivets of one of the chain links (A) and removing the link from the drive chain (B)

1. Remove the ground cable from the battery.

2. Remove the spark plugs.

3. Unscrew the drive chain tensioner mechanism.

4. Remove the upper drive chain cover.

5. Remove the upper chain guide.

6. Remove the cylinder head cover.

7. Cover the cylinder head and the area under the camshaft sprockets with a clean cloth.

8. Using an emery wheel or vulcanite, grind off the rivets on one of the chain links on the side of the camshaft sprocket that controls the exhaust valves (see picture).

9. Remove the retaining plate and chain link from the drive chain.

10. Be careful to remove the rag so that no metal filings get into the drive chain cover.

11. Using a chain connector, connect the ends of the old and new chain.

12. Keeping the drive chain in a constant tension position, turn the engine crankshaft clockwise. This will cause the new chain to follow the old one around the sprockets and guides.

13. Once the end of the new chain appears, disconnect the old chain from the new one.

14. Install the new chain onto the exhaust camshaft sprocket, then connect the two ends of the chain.

15. Install the retaining plate and rivet the chain connecting link.

16. Install the upper chain guide.

17. Install the upper drive chain cover.

18. Install the drive chain tensioner mechanism.

19. Turn the engine crankshaft clockwise and set the piston of the first cylinder to the top dead center and check that all timing marks are aligned with the pointers.

20. Install the cylinder head cover.

21. Screw in the spark plugs.

22. Connect the ground wire to the battery.
