Caution! Use a counter-sink hammer to remove the chain guide installation pin. Use sealant and new gaskets when installing the upper drive chain cover.

Removal

1. Remove the ground cable from the battery.

2. Drain the coolant from the cooling system.

3. Remove the cylinder head cover.

4. Disconnect the central high-tension wire from the distributor cap.

5. Unscrew the ground busbar from the upper timing chain cover and release the electrical wires from the clips on the cover. Unscrew the two bolts securing the bracket and coolant elbow to the upper timing chain cover and remove the elbow.

6. Remove the upper chain guide.

7. Remove the high tension wire and unscrew the plastic shield from the base of the upper drive chain cover.

8. Remove the bolts securing the coolant supply pipe to the radiator fan and water pump. Disconnect the pipe from the water pump and move it to the side.

9. Disconnect the electrical connector from the camshaft position sensor and the camshaft adjuster relay that controls the intake valves.

10. Disconnect the vacuum lines from the valve mounted on the front of the timing chain cover.

11. Remove the bolt securing the auxiliary drive belt tensioner post to the drive chain cover. Mark the location of the washers and spacers for proper reinstallation.

12. Remove the plug from the upper timing chain cover located under the camshaft that controls the intake valves.

13. Screw the additional bolt into the drive chain guide mounting pin.

14. Using a dead-blow hammer and an adapter, pull out the chain guide pin by the head of the additional bolt.

15. Unscrew the bolts securing the upper drive chain cover. The right bolt remains in the cover.

16. Remove the upper drive chain cover.

17. Remove the gasket from the groove at the top of the lower timing chain cover.

Installation

Caution: When installing a new upper timing chain cover, the position of the camshaft position sensor must be checked and, if necessary, adjusted.

Original published on the website mercedesman.ru

1. Clean the mating surfaces of the upper timing chain cover and cylinder head.

2. Apply a bead of sealant to the joint where the top of the lower timing chain cover meets the cylinder head.

3. Install a new gasket into the groove on the top of the lower timing chain cover and lubricate the top surface of the gasket.

4. Apply a thin layer of sealant to the mating surfaces of the upper timing chain cover and cylinder head.

5. Install a new seal onto the rear of the timing chain cover.

6. Install the lower right bolt into the cover, then install the cover onto the cylinder head.

7. Install the remaining cover mounting bolts and tighten the cover mounting bolts gradually and evenly to the specified torque, starting with the bottom bolts.

8. Install the chain guide dowel pin.

9. Further installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal. Fill the cooling system with coolant.
