Engine operating modes (Mercedes-Benz E-Class W210)

Start. Regardless of the position of the accelerator pedal, but depending on the temperature, the engine receives a different amount of fuel at startup. From 600 min⁻¹ (depending on the coolant temperature) you can adjust the speed with the accelerator pedal. The higher the coolant temperature, the less fuel is required to start.

Idle mode. The crankshaft position sensor, depending on the number of revolutions, transmits signals to the control unit, which compares the set and current values and regulates the amount of fuel supplied.

Set speed mode. Its task is to prevent vibration during movement. At the same time, depending on the number of revolutions, the crankshaft position sensor regulates the smoothness of the fuel supply, thereby avoiding "disturbances" from changes in the number of revolutions of the engine. The amount of fuel injected for each cylinder individually changes so much that a "quiet" mode of engine operation is established again. However, the number of revolutions of the idle speed remains constant.

Full load mode. Before the mechanically generated maximum fuel supply, the amount of fuel injected is somewhat limited, which ensures smooth acceleration. The amount of fuel supplied is also limited if the injection system is faulty (eDC light is on).

The engine goes into "runaway". In this mode, the control unit, receiving the appropriate signals, immediately stops the fuel supply.

Compressor control. At low engine speeds (less than 1100 min⁻¹) and engine loads over 90%, the air conditioning compressor is briefly switched off so that all power is used for the useful load. For normal compressor operation, up to 9 kW is required.
