Fig. 8.27. Pre-tensioning and loosening the automatic cable equalizer: 1 – brake cable equalizer; 2 – locking pin; 3 – eccentric; 4 – spring; 5 – equalizer return spring. Arrows indicate the direction of pre-tension. To loosen, disengage the spring
To replace brake cables or brake shoes, you must first pre-tension the automatic cable equalizer and then loosen it (arrows, Fig. 8.27). A corroded or difficult to move cable can cause the parking brake to operate unevenly. On an older vehicle, it is recommended that the rear brake cables be replaced in pairs.
Sequence of works
1. Raise and secure the vehicle, remove the rear wheel.
2. Remove the rear wheel brake disc.
3. Remove the rear seat cushion.
4. Remove the protective cover from the center above the automatic equalizer.
5. Create a pre-tension on the equalizer by inserting an Allen key into the center of the equalizer and turning it about half a turn to the right (see fig. 12.27). At the same time, press down so that the eccentric lock 3 snaps into place with the spring 4. Then release the engagement again using a screwdriver.

9. Release each cable from the brake shoe drive lever in the rear wheel brake mechanism. To do this, remove the retainer.

11. After reassembly, loosen the tension of the automatic equalizer and adjust the parking brake.
