The parking brake is built into the brake drum.
Removal
1. Release the parking brake completely and loosen the drive cable, refer to Section Checking the brake system. Adjusting the parking brake.
2. Mark the position of the rear wheels relative to the hubs with paint. This will allow you to install the balanced wheels in their original position during assembly. Loosen the wheel mounting bolts before jacking up the car. Raise the rear of the car, place it on stands and remove the rear wheels.
Attention! The operation of lifting and installing the car on stands is associated with danger! Therefore, before carrying out the operation, read the Section Jacking and towing Introduction to the manual.
3. Remove the rear brake caliper, refer to the relevant section.
4. Remove the brake disc, refer to the relevant section.
Caution! Before removing individual drum brake parts, remember their locations. Use the brake on the other side as a reference.

5. Disconnect the return spring (1) from the brake shoe (3) using special pliers (2) or a screwdriver.

6. Turn the drive shaft flange (1) so that the threaded hole is above the pressure spring (2).
7. Slightly compress the spring (2) using the MERCEDES-BENZ tool 040 (3) or a screwdriver to turn it 90° and remove it.
Note: The above tool can be made independently. To do this, weld a handle to one end of a rod of the appropriate diameter, and cut a groove about 4 mm deep and about 2.5 mm wide at the other end.
8. Remove the pressure spring on the second brake shoe in the same manner.

9. Move both brake shoes (1) apart and remove them through the drive shaft flange. Pay attention to the position of the adjusting mechanism, which is necessary for subsequent correct installation.

10. Disconnect the tension spring (4) from the brake shoes and remove the adjusting mechanism (details 1 to 3).
11. Press out the pin (5) on the expansion lock (6) and remove the lock from the brake cable.
Installation
1. If the linings of used brake shoes have burned out, it is also necessary to replace the shoe tension springs.
2. Lubricate all bearing and sliding surfaces on the expansion joint with a thin layer. Use high-temperature paste as a lubricant (for example LIQUI MOLY LM-36, MOLYKOTE-PASTE-U or G-RAPID).
3. Disassemble the adjustment mechanism. Lubricate the thread of the pressure element (1) and the cylindrical part of the adjustment gear (2) with high-temperature grease.
4. Screw the pressure element (1) into the adjusting gear (2) and insert it into the pressure sleeve (3). In this case, screw the pressure element in completely.
5. Secure the parking brake cable with the pin on the expansion joint. Then press the expansion joint towards the brake shield. When installing, make sure that the movable element of the expansion joint points upward.
6. Insert the adjusting mechanism between both brake shoes so that the pressure element points in the direction of travel.
7. Connect the first tension spring (4) to the brake shoe. Check that the connection is correct.
8. Stretch the brake shoes, insert them through the drive shaft flange and connect them with the spacer lock.

9. Insert the pressure spring (1) using the 040 MERCEDES-BENZ tool (3) or screwdriver (2) through the threaded hole into the brake shoe, compress it slightly, turn it 90° and connect it to the locking ring. Check that the spring is connected correctly. The hook of the pressure spring must be secured on the inside of the brake shield.
10. Connect the pressure spring to the second brake shoe.

11. Depending on the design, the second tension spring has hooks of different sizes at its ends. Connect the second tension spring to the spacer lock with a small hook for the upper brake shoe. Large hook (arrow on the illustration) use a screwdriver to connect it to the lower brake shoe.
12. Install the rear brake disc, refer to the relevant section.
13. Install the rear caliper, refer to the relevant section.
14. Install the rear wheels so that the marks made during removal match. Pre-lubricate the centering belt of the wheel disk on the hub with a thin layer of bearing grease. Do not lubricate the wheel mounting bolts. Replace rusty bolts. Tighten the bolts. Lower the car onto the wheels and tighten the bolts crosswise to 110 Nm.
15. Adjust the parking brake, refer to Section Checking the brake system. Adjusting the parking brake.
Attention! Press the brake pedal hard several times until you feel a noticeable resistance. This way the brake pads are pressed against the disc and take their working position.
16. Check the brake fluid level in the reservoir, if necessary, add fluid to the MAX mark.
Conduct a reliability check:
- Are the brake hoses secured?
- Is the brake hose secured in the holder?
- Are the air bleed nipples tightened?
- Is there enough brake fluid?
- With the engine running, check for leaks. To do this, press the brake pedal with a force of 200-300 N (20-30 kg) for 10 s. The pedal should not weaken. Check all connections for leaks.
