Replacing the front brake pads (Mercedes-Benz S-Class W116)

As already mentioned, fixed calipers are installed on the front wheels. There are two pistons in the caliper.

Brake pads must be replaced if the thickness of the friction layer of the lining is less than 2.0 mm.

Raise the vehicle and remove the front wheels.

In Teves calipers, remove the protective cover (see fig. 241), using a punch, remove the pad mounting pins and the spring cross-shaped bracket (see fig. 242).

In Bendix calipers, remove both safety pins, remove the pad mounting pins and the spring clip.



When reusing brake pads, they must be marked and then removed before removal. When replacing brake pads, the old pads can simply be removed.

Carefully clean the cavities in the brake pad support using a brush, as shown in Fig. 243, and check the condition of the dust rings on the cylinders.

If the brake pads are heavily worn, it is necessary to move the pistons apart in the brake cylinders. Pay attention to the level of brake fluid in the reservoir and, if necessary, suck out some of the fluid. In addition, check the position of the cutout on the piston relative to the guide surface of the brake pad. Check the piston position using a template (see fig. 244), when installed correctly, the protrusion on the front caliper pistons should be located at the bottom.

Apply a layer of Molycote "u" or Liqui-Moly 36 paste to the surface of the brake pad base, shown by the arrows in Fig. 245.

Install new brake pads.

Install a spring cross bracket into a Teves caliper or a spring bracket and brake pad mounting pins into a Bendix caliper.



In the Bendix caliper, insert safety pins into the pins.

Press the brake pedal several times to ensure that the brake pads are in the correct position.

Place and secure the front wheels, lower the car onto its wheels.
