Checking and replacing the parking brake pads (Mercedes-Benz E-Class W123)

0
1. Remove the rear brake discs (see Inspection, removal and installation of the brake disc).

2. Wipe the brakes thoroughly to remove dust. Be careful not to inhale it.

3. Measure the thickness of the brake pads and if they are worn to a thickness of 1.5 mm, replace the pads.

4. To remove the brake shoe retaining springs, align one of the wheel bolt holes with each spring in turn, compress the spring with a screwdriver, and then rotate it 90° to release it.

5. Mark the position of the release springs and then unhook and remove the lower spring.

6. Spread the lower part of the pads and pull them together with the adjustment mechanism and the upper tension spring under the axle flange.

7. Unhook the upper release spring and remove the shoes from the adjustment mechanism.

8. If necessary, remove the expander from the control cable by pulling out the pin with the head.

9. Wash the expander in solvent and wipe it dry. Lubricate the contact surfaces with a small amount of molybdenum-based grease.

10. Connect the expander to the control cable and install the pin. Hold the pin in place by pushing the expander toward the brake backing plate.

11. Check the bolts securing the support plate and the holder body using a socket wrench.

12. Lubricate the threads of the adjustment mechanism with a small amount of heat-resistant grease and then set the mechanism to its minimum length.

13. Install the top (with a large slot) the ends of the pads into the adjustment mechanism so that the mechanism wheel faces the front of the car, and attach the upper release springs to the pads.

14. Spread the bottom of the pads, place them back over the axle flange and insert the expander into the small slots in the pads.

15. Install the locking springs.

16. Attach the small hook on the lower return spring to the front shoe and the large hook to the rear shoe.

17. Install the brake discs.

18. Adjust the parking brake and check its operation before driving off.
