The sequence of removing the camshaft bearing caps on a 4-cylinder engine
Bearing caps No. 1, 3 and 5 are removed first (light arrows), and then bearing caps 2 and 4 (dark arrows).
The sequence of removing the camshaft bearing caps on a 5-cylinder engine
Bearing caps No. 1, 2 and 6 are removed first (light arrows), then bearing caps 3, 4 and 5 (dark arrows).
The sequence of removing the camshaft bearing caps on a 6-cylinder engine
Bearing caps No. 1, 5 and 6 are removed first (light arrows), then bearing caps 2, 3, 4 and 7 (dark arrows).
1. Remove the camshaft sprocket.
2. Check that the camshaft bearing caps are numbered starting from the drive chain.
3. Unscrew the bolts securing the camshaft bearing caps (see fig. 4-cylinder camshaft bearing cap removal sequence, 5-cylinder camshaft bearing cap removal sequence, 6-cylinder camshaft bearing cap removal sequence).
Attention! Follow the sequence of unscrewing the camshaft cover bolts to avoid damage to the camshaft.
Four-cylinder engines
1. Gradually and evenly loosen the camshaft bearing cap bolts No. 1, 3 and 5 and remove the caps.
2. Gradually loosen the second and fourth camshaft bearing cap bolts in a diagonal sequence by half a turn each pass until the bolts are completely unscrewed. This is necessary to gradually and evenly relieve the pressure of the valve springs on the camshaft.
3. Remove the camshaft from the cylinder head.
Five-cylinder engines
1. Gradually and evenly loosen the bolts securing the camshaft bearing caps No. 1, 2 and 6 and remove the caps.
2. Gradually, in a diagonal sequence, loosen the camshaft bearing bolts 3, 4 and 5 by half a turn for each pass until the bolts are completely unscrewed. This is necessary to gradually and evenly relieve the pressure of the valve springs on the camshaft.
3. Remove the camshaft from the cylinder head.
Six-cylinder engines
The location of the thrust half-ring for adjusting the axial play of the camshaft
1. Gradually and evenly loosen the camshaft bearing cap bolts No. 1, 5 and 6 and remove the caps.
2. Gradually loosen bolts 2, 3, 4, and 7 of the camshaft bearing caps in a diagonal sequence by half a turn for each pass until the bolts are completely unscrewed. This is necessary to gradually and evenly relieve the pressure of the valve springs on the camshaft.
3. Remove the camshaft from the cylinder head.
4. Remove the camshaft end play adjusting stop ring from the rear camshaft bearing cap (see fig. The location of the thrust half-ring for adjusting the axial play of the camshaft).
5. Remove the hydraulic valve lifters from their sockets in the cylinder head. Position the hydraulic tappets vertically in a container of clean engine oil so that they can be reinstalled.
