1. Apply the parking brake, then raise the front of the vehicle and secure it on stands.

2. Unscrew the nuts securing the ball joint pins of the central and transverse steering rods to the steering knuckle. Using a ball joint puller, remove the ball joint pins from the steering knuckle.

3. Unscrew the nut and remove the clamp bolt securing the steering arm to the steering gear, then remove the retaining ring (see picture).

4. Measure and record the distance between the top edge of the pitman arm and the steering gear housing. Check that the alignment mark on the shaft is visible through the clamping cut of the pitman arm. If not, make a mark.

5. Using a puller, remove the steering knuckle from the steering shaft. Check the condition of the lower steering gear sealing ring and replace it if necessary.

Installation

1. Clean the splines of the steering shaft and steering knuckle.

2. Apply Loctite 270 locking compound to the bipod splines.

3. Install the pitman arm onto the splines of the steering gear shaft. The alignment mark on the shaft should be visible through the clamping slot of the pitman arm.

4. Move the pitman arm along the shaft so that the distance between the top of the pitman arm and the steering gear housing is equal to the previously measured one.

5. Insert the pitman arm clamp bolt, then screw a new nut onto it and tighten to the specified torque. Install the retaining ring into the groove of the shaft.

6. Install the ball joint pins of the steering rods into the pitman arm, screw new nuts onto them and tighten them to the required torque. Lower the car.
