Attention! When installing, it is necessary to use a new bolt for fastening the rubber coupling of the steering column.

Removal

1. Remove the ground cable from the battery.

2. Remove the steering wheel.

3. Remove the steering column lock.

4. Remove the instrument cluster, steering column multifunction switch and steering column cover.

5. Working in the engine compartment and using paint or a scriber, mark the relative positions of the lower end of the steering column and the rubber coupling.

6. Unscrew and remove the upper bolt securing the coupling to the steering column (see Fig. Location of the bolt securing the rubber coupling to the steering column).

7. Unscrew the upper steering column mounting bolts, which are accessible through the instrument cluster opening. Unscrew the lower steering column mounting nuts (see Fig. Location of the lower steering column mounting nuts).

8. Remove the steering column boot bushing from the engine compartment bulkhead and remove the steering column from the vehicle. Check the condition of the rubber coupling and replace it if necessary.

Examination

1. The steering column has a telescopic safety element. In a frontal collision, the telescopic safety element is destroyed, absorbing a significant amount of energy, which reduces the risk of injury to the driver on the steering wheel. Check the condition of the steering column, especially its fastening elements for damage and deformation and, if necessary, replace.

2. Check the play of the steering shaft in the steering column bushings. If the steering column bushings are worn or damaged, the steering column must be repaired. Steering column repairs must be performed at a service station using special tools.

Installation

1. Before installation, lubricate the lower bushing of the steering column with universal grease. Align the marks on the rubber coupling and the steering column and install the steering column into the grooves of the rubber coupling.

2. Check that the steering column protective boot bushing is correctly positioned on the engine compartment bulkhead, then secure the steering column with bolts and nuts, tightening them to the specified torque.

3. Secure the rubber sleeve with a new bolt and tighten it to the specified torque.

4. Install the multifunction switch on the steering column and the instrument cluster on the instrument panel.

5. Install the steering column lock.
