Removal the steering wheel from the steering column


1. Remove the Mercedes-Benz emblem from the center of the steering wheel (see fig. Removing from the center of the steering wheel remove the Mercedes-Benz emblems).



2. Unscrew and remove the steering wheel mounting bolt (see Fig. Removing the steering wheel mounting bolt).

3. Using paint or a scriber, mark the relative positions of the steering wheel and steering shaft. Pull the steering wheel toward you and remove it from the splines of the steering shaft. If the steering wheel fits tightly on the splines of the steering shaft, turn it to the sides when removing it and tap the back of the steering wheel with your palm (see Fig. Removing the steering wheel from the steering column).

4. Check the condition of the horn contacts and contact ring for wear or damage and replace if necessary.

Models with airbag



1. Remove the airbag from the center of the steering wheel.

2. Unscrew and remove the steering wheel mounting bolt (see Fig. Removing the steering wheel mounting bolt).

3. Using paint or a scriber, mark the relative positions of the steering wheel and steering shaft. Pull the steering wheel toward you and remove it from the splines of the steering shaft. If the steering wheel fits tightly on the splines of the steering shaft, turn it to the sides when removing it and tap the back of the steering wheel with your palm (see Fig. Removing the steering wheel from the steering column).

4. Check the condition of the horn contacts and contact ring for wear or damage and replace if necessary.

Installation



Models without airbag



1. Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following points:


  • a - apply a thin layer of grease to the contact ring of the horn and install the steering wheel on the splines of the steering shaft in accordance with the marks made before removal;
  • b - secure the steering wheel with a new bolt and tighten it to the specified torque.

Models with airbag



1. Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following points:
  • a - if the position of the contact block was disturbed when removing the steering wheel, press on the block and rotate the central part of the block counterclockwise until it stops, and then from this position turn the central part of the block clockwise by 3 full turns;
  • b - Apply a thin layer of grease to the horn contact ring and install the steering wheel on the steering shaft splines in accordance with the marks made before removal. Check that the electrical wiring of the contact block is correctly positioned;
  • c - on early models, check that the reference mark on the top of the steering column is aligned with the hole in the contact block;
  • d - Screw in the new steering wheel mounting bolt and tighten it to the specified torque. Install the airbag in the center of the steering wheel.
