1. Turn the steering wheel (3) to the position corresponding to straight-ahead movement.

2. Remove the key from the ignition switch - the electronic column lock (ESC) device should operate.

3. Turn on the auxiliary battery and connect it to the standard battery, then disconnect the negative cable from the latter.

4. Remove the airbag module from the steering wheel (see Chapter On-board electrical equipment).

5. On models with the corresponding configuration (release from 01.07.02 with code VL0) disconnect the connector (1) of the steering wheel heating device wiring.

6. Having fixed the steering wheel (32) motionless, unscrew the countersunk head screw (32c) - the screw must be replaced without fail.

7. Passing the airbag wiring through the passage hole, remove the steering wheel, after marking its installation position on the column shaft.

8. Visually assess the condition of the contact cable drum (A45), replace it if necessary (see Section Removal and installation the steering wheel contact cable drum).

9. Installation is carried out in the reverse order, make sure that the mounting marks applied during wheel dismantling are correctly aligned.
