1. Turn the steering wheel to the straight-ahead position.
2. On models with the corresponding configuration (code ET2), activate the service mode of the TELE AID emergency call system (see Section Activation/deactivation of the service mode of the TELE AID emergency call system).
3. Turn on the auxiliary battery and connect it to the standard battery, then disconnect the negative cable from the latter.

5. Loosen the mounting bolts (32h) enough to allow the contact cable drum (A45) to be removed - the bolts also act as guides to ensure that the components are aligned precisely during assembly.
6. Carefully remove the drum (A45) from the steering column housing.
7. Inspect the removed drum for mechanical defects; if necessary, prepare a replacement assembly.
8. Installation is carried out in the reverse order - ensure that the drum is fully and correctly seated; on models produced from 01.07.02, try not to damage the contact terminals (1).
9. Before installing the steering wheel, center the cable drum (A45) by fully screwing in the fastening screws (32h), turning the drum counterclockwise until noticeable resistance appears, then turn it back 3-3.5 turns so that the bolts (32h) can be unscrewed again through the specially provided openings.

Note: The cable drum can be rotated a maximum of 6-7 revolutions.
10. If equipped accordingly, deactivate the service mode of the TELE AID system.
11. Finally, clear the memory of the on-board diagnostic system processor (see Chapter Engine electrical systems).
