A54 - Contact drum
1. Turn the steering wheel straight ahead.
2. Appropriate models (code ET2) activate the service mode of the TELE AID emergency call system (see Section Activation / deactivation of the service mode of the TELE AID emergency call system).
3. Turn on the auxiliary battery and connect it to the standard battery, then disconnect the negative cable from the latter.
7 - Auxiliary battery
8 - Module positive wire terminal
9 - Terminal of the negative wire of the module
W10 - Battery Ground
4. Remove the steering wheel (see Section Removal and installation of a steering wheel).
5. Turn out fixing bolts (32h) so that it is possible to remove the contact cable drum (A45), - bolts also act as guides, ensuring the unambiguous pairing of components during assembly.
6. Carefully remove the drum (A45) from the steering column cover.
7. Inspect the removed drum for mechanical defects, if necessary, prepare a replacement assembly.
8. Installation is carried out in the reverse order - make sure that the drum is completely and correctly seated, on production models from 07/01/02 try not to damage the contact terminals (1).
9. Before installing the steering wheel, center the cable drum (A45), for which, fully screwing the fixing screws (32h), turn the drum counterclockwise until you feel a noticeable resistance, then return it back 3-3.5 turns so that the bolts (32h) could be unscrewed again through specially provided openings.
Note. The cable drum can be rotated by a maximum of 6-7 turns.
10. Deactivate the service mode of the TELE AID system if equipped accordingly.
11. In conclusion, clear the memory of the processor of the on-board self-diagnosis system (see chapter Engine Electrical Systems).
