1. Jack up the car and place it on supports.

2. Using a screwdriver, manually check for any axial play in the steering shaft cardan joint (arrow). Ask an assistant to turn the steering wheel left and right to check the joint for radial play, which should also be absent.

3. Assess the condition of the tie rod ends (1) in the steering knuckles/pitman arm (2).

4. Estimate the amount of play (a) in the steering wheel.

5. After thoroughly wiping, assess the condition of the rubber boots (3) of the steering gear component hinge joints. If cracks, signs of leaks or other defects are detected, the corresponding hinges must be replaced as an assembly - simply replacing the boot is only allowed if you are absolutely sure that no dirt could get inside the hinge.

6. The condition of the ball pins (4) of the steering tips can be assessed by pressing out the anthers using a special device (5).
