Replacing the lower steering gear seal ring (Mercedes-Benz E-Class W124)

1. Remove the steering arm.

2. Remove the upper snap ring from the steering shaft, then carefully remove the O-ring, making an alignment mark on the shaft.

3. Clean the shaft and sealing ring seat from dirt.

4. Wrap the shaft splines with adhesive tape to avoid damaging the working edges of the new seal ring when installing it. Install the new seal ring on the shaft and press it into the crankcase seat.

5. Remove the adhesive tape from the shaft splines, then install the upper snap ring into the shaft groove.

6. Install the steering arm.

7. On models with power steering, bleed the hydraulic system.
