Oil pan — removal and installation (Mercedes-Benz C-Class W201)

0
Contents: Removal ↡ Installation ↡
Note: This job requires a suitable lifting device (hoist or winch). When installing, you will need a new pan gasket and intake system clamp nuts.

Removal

1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

2. Remove the air cleaner as described in Chapter 4.

3. Remove the engine shield as described in Chapter 11.

4. Remove the anti-roll bar as described in Chapter 10.

5. Drain the engine oil as described in Chapter 1A.

6. Where required, disconnect the wires from the oil level sensor mounted on the pan.

7. Remove the oil dipstick and cover or plug the dipstick tube to prevent dirt from getting inside.

8. Unclip the radiator fan shroud and place it on top of the fan blades as described in Chapter 3.

9. On automatic transmission models, disconnect the transmission fluid heat exchanger tubes. Be prepared for some fluid to spill. To keep dirt out and prevent further fluid loss, cover or plug the open ends of the tubes and the openings in the transmission.

10. Where provided, on the left side of the vehicle, unscrew the two bolts securing the engine mount shock absorber to the body element.

11. Where provided, remove the engine travel limiter as described in paragraph 17.

12. Loosen the bolts securing the exhaust bracket to the gearbox, then loosen the nuts of the bracket securing the bracket to the exhaust system and rotate the bracket down away from the gearbox.

13. Disconnect the front pipes from the manifold as described in Chapter 4.

14. Remove the two lower bolts securing the engine to the gearbox.

15. Disconnect the longitudinal steering rod from one end as described in Chapter 10.

16. Where provided, unscrew the mounting bolts and remove the reflective plate. Note that on some models the plate is an integral part of the tray.

17. Attach the hoist and winch to the engine rigging brackets and lift the hoist to lift the engine.

18. Working in turn on each side of the engine, loosen the bolts securing the left and right engine mounts to the front crossmember.

19. Carefully lift the engine to gain access to the oil pan bolts. To avoid damaging parts when lifting the engine, it is recommended to place sheets of cardboard or plywood between the engine and the bulkhead and between the engine and the radiator.

20. Working sequentially in a diagonal order, unscrew the pan mounting bolts. Remember the location of the bolts, as they may vary in length. Also remember the location of the various brackets or holders that are secured with the pan bolts.

21. Lower the pan down from the vehicle and remove the gasket.

Installation

22. Begin installation by removing the remaining oil pan and cylinder block gasket and wipe dry.

23. Position the new gasket on the pan, then lift the pan into place and insert the bolts into place.

24. Tighten the bolts gradually to the required torque.

25. On models with a separate oil pan deflector plate, trim the protective fabric on the flywheel side of the oil pan gasket.

26. Carefully lower the engine into place, then install and tighten the lower engine mount bolts to the specified torque.

27. Disconnect the winch from the rigging brackets and remove the hoist.

28. Where required, install and adjust the engine travel limiter as described in paragraph 17.

29. Where provided, install the sump deflector plate and tighten the mounting bolts

30. Connect the longitudinal steering rod as described in Chapter 10.

31. Install the two lower engine-to-gearbox mounting bolts and tighten them to the specified torque.

32. Connect the front downpipes to the manifold as described in Chapter 4.

33. Install the bolts securing the exhaust system support bracket to the transmission. Then move the bracket onto the exhaust system and tighten the bracket nuts.

34. Where provided, install and tighten the engine mount shock absorber mounting bolts to the body element.

35. On models with automatic transmission, connect the heat exchanger pipes to the transmission.

36. Install the radiator fan shroud (Chapter 3).

37. Where required, connect the oil level sensor wires.

38. Install the front anti-roll bar as described in Chapter 10.

39. Make sure the drain plug is installed and tightened. Then install the engine shield.

40. Install the air cleaner.

41. Lower the vehicle to the ground and fill the engine with the required oil (see "Weekly check" and Chapter 1A).

42. Connect the negative battery terminal.

43. On models with automatic transmission, check the fluid level and, if necessary, top up (Chapter 1A).
