Note: This operation requires a sliding hammer and an appropriate adapter.
1. On a manual transmission model, a ball or needle bearing is installed on the end of the crankshaft to support the end of the input shaft of the transmission.
2. Follow these steps to replace the bearing.
3. Remove the clutch as described in Chapter 6.
4. Using a sliding hammer and an adapter, remove the bearing and retaining ring from the end of the crankshaft.
5. Thoroughly clean the bearing housing at the end of the crankshaft.
6. Manufacturers recommend lubricating the bearing with Mercedes-Benz adhesive before installation.
7. Using a pipe or wrench head, drive the bearing into place up to the stop.
8. Hammer the retaining ring with a pipe or wrench head so that it is flush with the end of the crankshaft.
9. Install the clutch as described in Chapter 6.
