Crankshaft Centering Bearing — Replacement (Mercedes-Benz C-Class W201)

Note: To perform this operation you will need a sliding hammer and the appropriate adapter.


1. On the model with a manual transmission, a ball or needle bearing is installed on the end of the crankshaft to support the end of the gearbox input shaft.

2. To replace the bearing, follow these steps:.

3. Remove the clutch as described in Chapter 6.

4. Using a sliding hammer and an adapter, remove the bearing and retaining ring from the end of the crankshaft.

5. Thoroughly clean the bearing housing at the end of the crankshaft.

6. Manufacturers recommend lubricating the bearing with Mercedes-Benz adhesive compound before installation.

7. Using a pipe or a wrench, hammer the bearing into place until it reaches the stop.

8. Tap the snap ring with a pipe or wrench until it is flush with the end of the crankshaft.

9. Install the clutch as described in Chapter 6.
