Toe Angle Adjustment
Toe-in is defined as the difference in distance between the front and rear sides of the front wheels, measured at the edges of the discs at hub level. Excessive toe-in can be detected by the wear of the outer tracks of the tire tread, insufficient toe-in by wear of the inner tracks of the tire tread. For verification, an accurate instrument with sufficient measurement limits is required.
When checking the angle of convergence, proceed as follows:
- set the wheels straight;
- place the measuring device at the level of the hubs to the edges of the rims from the front side. Set the contact pins of the device to zero, mark the places where the contact pins are applied on the tires with chalk;
- move the car forward so that the front wheels turn half a turn, and attach the device to the rear sides of the wheels to the marks made earlier with chalk. The difference between the two obtained indicators should be (0±1) mm. If so, there is no need to adjust the toe. Otherwise, the set value must be set. At the service station, the convergence is measured in degrees;
- Toe-in is adjusted by changing the length of the tie rod ends after loosening the clamping collars. Before tightening the clamps, fully press the tie rod ends on both sides in the same direction. After tightening, check the free movement of the tips in the longitudinal direction;
- at the end of the work, measure the convergence again.
Camber and caster adjustment of the front wheels
These indicators can only be measured. It is impossible to adjust them on your own, since this is due to the design of the bridge. When measuring, it is necessary to measure the height of the car in front and behind, after which their difference is determined. The result obtained is compared with the technical data (see Attachment). If it is determined that the considered angles are not in accordance with the norm, you should contact a workshop specializing in measuring the suspension geometry of vehicles of this type.
Steering angle ratio
To measure the ratio of the steering angles of the steered wheels, it is necessary to rotate the wheel passing the inner turning radius by 20°. The measurement is carried out when the wheels are mounted on swivel discs so that when the wheels are turned to the left and right, the settings are maintained. Measurement is best done at a service station.
