Attention! The front wheel bearing is pressed into the steering knuckle, so when removed, there is a high probability of damage to it and it may need to be replaced.
Front wheel hub
Removing
Using a screwdriver to remove the protective cap from the front wheel hub
Removing the spring from the hub axle
Loosening the clamping bolt securing the front wheel hub nut
Loosen the front wheel hub nut
1. Remove the front brake disc. On models with anti-lock braking system, remove the ABS sensor from the front wheel.
2. Using a screwdriver or punch, remove the protective cap located in the center of the front wheel hub. If the protective cap is damaged during removal, it must be replaced (see fig. Using a screwdriver to remove the protective cap from the front wheel hub).
3. If present, remove the spring from the hub axle (see fig. Removing the spring from the hub axle).
4. Loosen the clamping bolt that secures the hub nut from unscrewing, then unscrew the nut and remove it from the hub axle. If present, remove thrust washer (see fig. Loosening the clamping bolt securing the front wheel hub nut, Unscrewing the front wheel hub nut).
5. Remove the front wheel hub from the steering knuckle. If the hub cannot be removed, a puller must be used.
6. If the bearing inner race remains on the steering knuckle, use a puller to remove it from the hub axle, then remove the hub sealing ring.
7. Check the condition of the steering knuckle and replace if necessary.
Repair
1. Remove the outer bearing inner race from the hub.
2. Remove the o-ring from the back of the hubs and then remove the inner bearing inner race. 3. Install the hub on a suitable drift and, using a hammer and punch, drive out the outer bearing inner race. At the same time, do not distort the ring so as not to damage the bearing seat in the hub.
4. Turn the hub over and knock out the outer ring of the inner bearing in the same way.
5. Clean the hub of dirt and grease and, using sandpaper, sand down the burrs on the hub. Check the condition of the hub for cracks, wear and mechanical damage and replace if necessary. On models with anti-lock braking system, check the condition of the sensor gear rotor.
6. Before reassembly, apply a light coat of grease to the bearing outer race and hub mating surface. Also lubricate the raceways of the inner ring.
7. Install the hub on the arbor and install the inner bearing outer race into the hub. Using a tubular mandrel resting on the outer race of the bearing and a press, press the bearing race into the hub as far as it will go. When pressing, do not distort the bearing ring.
8. Turn the hub over and press the outer race of the outer bearing into the hub in the same way.
9. Install the inner bearing inner race. On the back of the hub, install the sealing ring with the working edges to the bearing. Fill the bearings with two-thirds of the full amount of grease, then install the outer bearing inner race.
Installation
1. Apply a light coat of grease to the back of the hub o-ring and install the hub onto the knuckle pin.
2. Install the thrust washer and screw on the hub nut.
3. While tightening the hub nut, press the inner races of the hub bearing onto the steering knuckle. After installing the hub, adjust the axial play of the hub bearing. After adjustment, tighten the clamping bolt that secures the hub mounting nut from unscrewing.
4. Install the spring on the steering knuckle.
5. Install a protective cap with grease on the hub.
6. Install the brake disc and, if equipped, the anti-lock braking system front wheel sensor.
