If the engine has not yet been removed from the vehicle, first perform the following steps:
1. Remove the radiator.
2. Remove the air cleaner.
3. Remove the timing chain tensioner.
4. Remove the distributor.
5. Remove the inlet pipeline on the M 110 engine.
6. Remove the water pump/alternator drive belt.
Engine M 123
1. Bring the piston of the 1st cylinder to the TDC position.
2. Turn away a bolt and remove a casing directing the distributor and a spacer.
3. Note the position of the groove in the drive shaft, then remove the shaft from the cylinder block using long nose pliers.
4. Remove, where present, the rear suspension height control hydraulic pump.
5. Using an internal hex socket wrench, unscrew the cover bolts from the front of the cylinder block and remove the gasket.
6. Turn out a bolt from an asterisk of a camshaft, holding it in a motionless position by means of the metal bar passed in one of openings.
7. Slide the sprocket off the chain and tie it to one side.
8. Using an Allen socket wrench, remove the pulley and vibration damper bolts from the crankshaft front flange.
9. Using a hammer or puller, remove the lower axle of the right chain guide through the hole in the flange and remove the chain guide upwards. If there is no hole, remove the flange.
10. Remove the bolt from the intermediate sprocket, holding it from turning with a metal bar passed through the hole in the sprocket.
11. Turn out a restrictive bolt of a chain from the left side of the block of cylinders.
Removal of a restrictive hairpin of a distributive chain
12. Push the intermediate shaft back and remove the sprocket.
13. Turn away a fixing bolt of the bearing and remove a washer.
14. Using a suitable bolt, pull out the intermediate shaft along with the front bearing.
15. Remove the bearing from the shaft.
Engine M 110
Removing the intermediate gear (engine M 110)
1. Remove the plug on the left side of the cylinder block with an inertial puller.
2. Remove the oil pump drive shaft using the puller bolt.
3. Remove the pulley and vibration damper bolts from the crankshaft front flange with an Allen socket wrench.
4. Remove the top plug from the TDC sensor bracket, then unscrew and remove the oil pressure reducing valve.
5. Turn away bolts of the case of the distributor and remove a lining. Remove the leash.
6. While holding the intermediate gear from turning, unscrew the oil supply bolt and remove the washer.
7. Turn away a restrictive hairpin of a chain from the left side of the block of cylinders.
8. While tapping the intermediate chamber, slide it back and lift it up.
9. Close the lower part of the camshaft drive with a clean cleaning material.
10. Remove the bearing fixing bolt and remove the circlip and washer.
11. Using a suitable bolt, remove the intermediate shaft along with the front bearing. Remove the bearing from the shaft.
12. If necessary, remove the rear bearing from the cylinder block with a puller.
