Checking the condition of the drive shaft boots (Mercedes-Benz M-Class W163)

0
1. Drive shaft boots are very important elements, as they protect constant velocity joints (CV joints) from dirt, water and other foreign objects that cause damage. External contamination of boots with oil and grease can lead to premature failure of their material, so it is recommended to periodically wash the boots with soap and water.

2. Inspect the boots for tears and cracks, as well as loose clamps. If signs of cracks or grease leakage are found, the boot should be replaced.

Check the condition of the drive shaft boot (1) and the reliability of the clamps (2)

3. At the same time, check the general condition of the constant velocity joints by holding the shaft and trying to turn the wheel. Try again by holding the inner constant velocity joint and turning the shaft. Any noticeable play indicates wear in the joint, wear in the shaft grooves, or loosening of the shaft lock nut.
