Drive shafts and drive shaft covers — checking the condition (Mercedes-Benz C-Class W201)

1. With the vehicle raised and supported on supports, slowly turn the rear wheel. Check the condition of the rubber boots on the outer constant velocity joint by squeezing the boots to open the folds. Check for cracks, tears, or damage to the rubber on the boots, which could cause grease to leak out and water and dirt to enter the joint (see fig. 13.1). Also check the condition and reliability of the fastening clamps. Repeat the check on the inner hinges. If damage or destruction is found, the covers should be replaced (see Chapter 8).



2. At the same time, check the general condition of the constant velocity joints by holding the drive shaft and trying to turn the wheel. Repeat this check by holding the inner joint and trying to turn the drive shaft. Any perceptible movement indicates wear of the joints, wear of the drive shaft splines, or looseness of the drive shaft mounting nut.
