Checking the front brake pads (Mercedes-Benz C-Class W201)

1. Set the parking brake firmly, then jack up the front of the vehicle and place it on stands. Remove the front wheels.

2. To quickly check the thickness of the friction linings on each pad, you can use the inspection hole in the caliper. The thickness of the linings remaining on the pads is visible. However, remember that only one of the pads is completely visible.

3. For a more complete check, it is necessary to remove the pads from the caliper and clean them thoroughly. At the same time, you can check the condition of the caliper and brake disc on both sides. More details on this are given in chapter 9.

4. If the wear of at least one of the linings has exceeded the permissible level, all four pads on this axle must be replaced.

Warning: Do not rotate pads to compensate for uneven wear as this may result in loss of braking effectiveness.
